Alpha - Remake on-line
The Fairy Tale REVAMPED » Devlog
Hello folks;
Well here is the first release of the complete redo of the game.
Let me explain a few things
Why to do this remake anyway?
The reason for that was because the old version required OpenGL which I could no longer get to work. The BlitzMax compiler which I used to create the original LAURA II engine went haywire on me so I could do nothing about it and well, there were more issues that I could no longer get fixed.
Now what does the new game bring?
- The LAURA II engine written in BlitzMax has been replaced by Apollo, coded in C++. Apollo uses SDL2 which is meant to be able to work on all kinds of graphics and audio engines and to work things out automatically. Saves me a lot of work, and hopefully a lot of misary in the future.
- The scripts have been completely rewritten from scratch. This because the entire architecture of Apollo is different than LAURA II.
- Due to that savegames of the old and the new version are NOT compatible with each other.
- The Game Jolt Trophy support has been removed. As well as the support for the Anna server.
- In stead of that the new game uses the local medal system. This game does still feature "Anna's Temple" and the number of bonuses you can get there is still tied to achievements you may have gotten in any game of mine (as long as it supports the new Medal system). That is now Dyrt.NET, Star Story, this game, and yes Star Story II is also planned to have support for this system.
- The launcher is no longer needed.
- Mac is no longer officially supported. I hope I can support Linux in the future, however Linux and I ain't the best of friends so no promises yet.
- A few cosmetic changes have been done to the game.
- The game's main mechanics have been kept the same as much as possible. There are also no notable changes to the story line either, except for a few spelling and grammar errors fixed that I found during this operation. I'm sure there are still a lot of those in there anyway, though.
- All the maps are the same as before. The only modifications were under-the-hood modifications to make sure the new scripts could pick them up all in a better way.
- The Lost City of Dandleton was in the old game only available in a New Game+ run. I now turned it into a regular sidequest, due to this particular dungeon having too much background story on the game's main antagonist. Those who are really interested in the storyline and the game's world lore should definitely try to seek this sidequest out.
- To compensate the New Game+ I did add one new dungeon only available in the New Game+. Can you find it?
- Working out ALL the masters could get you some trouble in the ability list. That has been taken care of.
- I did find some bugs that the original game had that did escape my notice back then. When I had to rewrite most of the code anyway, why not fix those in the process, eh?
- The old game required swap files (tons of them actually). The new game doesn't.
Important! This is alpha!
And that means this game is not yet entirely done. Feel free to come to my issue tracker to have a looksie of things I still have to do, and what bugs are still present. If you found any bugs that you think I don't know of, don't hesitate and post it there.

And that's all, for now.
See ya, folks, and enjoy the game.
